Seated in the stiff, vinyl-covered chair at his father’s bedside, Miles was jarred from his nap by the ringing of his phone. He searched around, finding it in a crevice between his thigh and the armrest. Swiping the screen, he answered. “Hello?”

“Hi, Miles. It’s Cambria.”

He swallowed. “Hey there.” He hadn’t expected to hear from her, at least not so soon. It had only been a few hours since he’d left her house. “What’s up?”

“I told you earlier I’d check in on your dad today, remember?” She paused. “How is he? Any news?”

He felt his chest contract. There she goes, being sweet and caring again. Has she forgotten what we’re supposed to be doing? “He had a mild heart attack, and he’ll need to stay here at least a couple of days to recuperate before they send him home.” He glanced over at his father, who was lying in bed watching In the Heat of the Night. “He’s awake now, watching TV.”

“That’s good. Sounds like he’s out of the woods.”

“He is, as long as he follows the doctor’s orders and keeps his stress levels down.”

“Tell that to your mother,” Caleb groused from his perch in bed. His sour expression and folded arms made him look like a child in the throes of a tantrum, but Miles had better sense than to tell him that.

“I heard him,” she said. “At least he’s up and talking, right?”

“Yeah.” Miles chuckled. “Let’s hope his mood improves right along with his condition.”

“Listen, I know you’ve got a lot going on right now, but can I ask you a favor?”

His brow hitched. Was she about to ask him something practical? Or something cheeky? “What is it?”

“I got a financial statement from my accountant today. I can’t tell what the problem is, exactly, but something’s off.” She paused. “Please don’t feel like you have to do it this minute, but if you get some free time, would you mind looking over it?”

He ran a hand over his head. “Can’t promise it’ll be anytime soon, but I’ll take a look. I’ll text you my email.” He took a few seconds to send off the text.

“Thanks, I appreciate it.” She paused. “I know you have a lot going on, and I don’t want to hold you. But it was nice hearing your voice, and I’m glad your dad is improving.”

“I really appreciate you being so caring.” He drew a deep breath, feeling the stress of his family situation sitting on his shoulders. How can I tell her that the more caring she is, the more time I wanna spend making love to her? He touched his temple, where the beginnings of a tension headache were settling in.

“You still there?” she asked.

“Yes. Sorry.” He chuckled. “My thoughts got away from me for a moment.”

“I think I can guess the general direction your mind went. I may or may not be thinking about last night, too.” She giggled. When she spoke again, her words were soft, just above a whisper. “Go take care of your dad, Miles.
